About Justin Hawthorne

Growing up within the boundaries of the incredible Table Mountain National Park Justin Hawthorne had the mountains of Silvermine as his literal backyard. This is where Justin’s love for the Table Mountain range all began. Fast forward 35 years and today he is a full-time mountain guide in the Western Cape with professional accreditation by the legal bodies in South Africa. Sharing his love for nature by leading interpretive nature trails & adventurous hikes across the Cape Fold Mountains allows Justin to live out his passion daily.

As a professional mountain guide in South Africa, Justin spends many hours each week covering the trails in the Western Cape, capturing magic mountain moments on camera along the way.

Justin believes in promoting responsible mountain use and spreads the word of the leave no trace principles with whomever he communicates with in the outdoors. The #LoveTableMountain brand is centred around his home, the Table Mountain Chain, but is a love for all things Fynbos! All things Fynbos and a whole lot more. It’s about the mountains, coastal plains and deep ravines – all supporting incredible biodiversity which make walking anywhere in the southwestern Cape an absolute treat. His core strengths include interpretation of the botanical riches found within the Cape Floral Kingdom, the industrial/waterworks history of Table Mountain and having a vast knowledge of the adventurous trails of the Cape Peninsula. Another strong interest is with observing animal behaviours on the Table Mountain range and this certainly keeps him occupied in his spare time. He is also a member of the Mountain Club of South Africa, the first conservation body in South Africa.

Justin is a qualified and registered Adventure Guide. He too holds a National Diploma in Civil Engineering, obtained from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Additionally he is completing his National Diploma in Nature Conservation through the University of South Africa which he does part-time.

Justin travels whenever possible and has trekked a number of iconic mountains in tropical Philippines. Other interests which all play a strong role in this blog include photography, writing and enjoying Cape wine with family & friends.

Lace up your hiking boots and join the adventures!
