Growing up within the boundaries of the incredible Table Mountain National Park Justin Hawthorne had the mountains of Silvermine as his literal backyard. This is where Justin’s love for the Table Mountain range all began. Fast forward 30 years and today he is a full-time mountain guide in the Western Cape with professional accreditation by the legal bodies in South Africa. Sharing his love for nature by leading interpretive nature trails & adventurous hikes in Cape Floristic Region allows Justin to live out his passion daily.
As a pro mountain guide in South Africa, Justin spends many hours each week covering the trails in the Western Cape, capturing magic mountain moments along the way.
He is a member of the Mountain Club of South Africa, the first conservation body in South Africa. Justin believes in promoting responsible mountain use and spreads the word of the leave no trace principles with whomever he communicates with in the outdoors. His core strengths include interpretation of the botany found within the Cape Floristic Region, the industrial/waterworks history of Table Mountain and having a vast knowledge of the adventurous trails of the Cape Peninsula. Another strong interest is with observing animal behaviours on the Table Mountain range and this certainly keeps him occupied in his spare time.
Justin travels whenever possible and has a particular interest in trekking the tropical mountains of the Philippines. He holds a National Diploma in Civil Engineering, obtained from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Other interests which all play a strong role in this blog include photography, writing and enjoying Cape wine with family & friends.
